Bezienswaardigheden / tips 2026:

1)
Sainte-Mère-Église: Sainte-Mère-Église is een kleine gemeente en beroemd om zijn rol tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, met name de D-Day landingen op 6 juni 1944 en ligt ongeveer 13 km vanaf Utah Beach. In de nacht voor de geallieerde landing sprongen Amerikaanse parachutisten hier uit het vliegtuig. Het dorp werd een van de eerste plaatsen die werd bevrijd. Een bekende gebeurtenis is die van parachutist John Steele, die met zijn parachute aan de kerktoren bleef hangen (ook bekend uit de film The Longest Day uit 1962). Vandaag de dag is Sainte-Mère-Église een belangrijke herdenkingsplek met een kerk, monumenten en het Airborne Museum, waar de geschiedenis van de parachutisten wordt verteld.

De kerk van Sainte-Mère-Église: De kerk van Sainte-Mère-Église is ook bekend geworden door haar rol tijdens D-Day. In de nacht van de invasie landden Amerikaanse parachutisten in en rond het dorp. Als er een mis of ceremonie is, kan het zijn dat de deur tijdelijk gesloten is of dat je even moet wachten.

Place du Marché: De Place du Marché (Marktplein) is het belangrijkste plein in het hart van het dorp en ligt dicht bij de kerk en andere bezienswaardigheden. Het plein is een gezellige plek om even te zitten, rond te lopen of iets te drinken in één van de cafés of terrasjes. Naast de vaste markt zijn er ook seizoenmarkten waaronder de marché du terroir (streekmarkt) in de zomermaanden (juli-augustus) en een gezellige markt met lokale producten en lekkernijen. 

4) Airborne Museum: Het Airborne Museum is Sainte-Mère-Église vertelt het verhaal van de Amerikaanse parachutisten tijdens D-Day op 6 juni 1944. Het museum toont orginele vliegtuigen, uniformen, wapens en parachutes en laat zien hoe de soldaten het dorp en de omgeving bevrijdden. Met interactieve tentoonstellingen en persoonlijke verhalen, zoals die van John Steele, geeft het museum een indrukwekkend beeld van de gevechten en de bevrijding van Normandië. Gedurende het hoogseizoen kan het erg druk zijn het is daarom raadzaam om de tickets van te voren online te kopen.

Sainte-Mère-Église: Sainte-Mère-Église is a small commune famous for its role during World War II, particularly the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. It is located about 8 miles (13 km) from Utah Beach. The night before the Allied landing, American paratroopers jumped from the plane here. The village was one of the first places to be liberated. A famous incident is the paratrooper John Steele, who found himself hanging from the church tower with his parachute (also known from the 1962 film The Longest Day). Today, Sainte-Mère-Église is a major memorial site with a church, monuments, and the Airborne Museum, which tells the story of the paratroopers.

Place du Marché: The Place du Marché (Market Square) is the main square in the heart of the village and is close to the church and other landmarks. The square is a pleasant place to sit, stroll, or enjoy a drink at one of the cafés or terraces. Besides the regular market, there are also seasonal markets, including the marché du terroir (regional market) in the summer months (July-August) and a lively market with local products and delicacies. 


4) Airborne Museum: The Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Église tells the story of the American paratroopers during D-Day on June 6, 1944. The museum displays original aircraft, uniforms, weapons, and parachutes, and illustrates how the soldiers liberated the village and surrounding area. With interactive exhibits and personal stories, such as that of John Steele, the museum offers a compelling glimpse into the fighting and liberation of Normandy. During peak season, it can be very busy, so it's advisable to purchase tickets online in advance. 





Sainte-Mère-Église is vooral bekend omdat het één van de eerste Franse plaatsen was die door de geallieerden werd bevrijd tijdens de invasie van Normandië. In de nacht van 5-6 juni 1944 sprongen Amerikaanse paratroopers uit de 82nd en 101st Airborne Divisions uit C-47 transportvliegtuigen boven de regio. Door wind en navigatiefouten kwamen veel troepen direct boven Sainte-Mère-Église terecht, wat leidde tot hevige gevechten met de Duitse bezetters in en rond het dorp.

Sainte-Mère-Église is best known for being one of the first French towns liberated by the Allies during the Normandy invasion. On the night of June 5–6, 1944, American paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions jumped from C-47 transport planes over the region. Due to wind and navigational errors, many troops landed directly over Sainte-Mère-Église, leading to fierce fighting with the German occupiers in and around the village. 

Rond de kerk vonden hevige gevechten plaats tussen Amerikaanse parachutisten en Duitse troepen. De kerk zelf liep schade op, maar bleef grotendeels overeind. De inname van Sainte-Mère-Église was belangrijk omdat het een strategisch kruispunt controleerde, cruciaal voor de opmars vanaf Utah Beach.

Heavy fighting took place around the church between American paratroopers and German troops. The church itself sustained damage but remained largely intact. The capture of
Sainte-Mère-Église was important because it controlled a strategic crossroads, crucial for the advance from Utah Beach.






Een van de bekendste gebeurtenissen van die ochtend is het verhaal van Private John Steele, wiens parachute bleef hangen aan de toren van de kerk van Sainte-Mère-Église. Steele hing urenlang vast, werd uiteindelijk gevangen genomen door Duitse soldaten, maar ontsnapte later weer naar zijn eenheid. Ter herinnering hangt er een
mannequin met parachute aan de kerktoren, een iconisch beeld dat veel bezoekers herkennen uit de film The Longest Day (1962).

One of the most famous events of that morning is the story of Private John Steele, whose parachute became stuck on the tower of the church of Sainte-Mère-Église. Steele hung for hours, was eventually captured by German soldiers, but later escaped back to his unit. In remembrance, a
mannequin with a parachute hangs from the church tower, an iconic image that many visitors recognize from the film The Longest Day (1962). 



Na de oorlog kreeg de kerk een herdenkingsfunctie. Binnen zijn glas-in-loodramen geplaatst die de parachtisten en de bevrijding herdenken. De kerk is nu een symbool van D-Day en de bevrijding van Frankrijk.

After the war, the church served as a memorial. Stained-glass windows inside commemorate the paratroopers and the liberation. The church is now a symbol of D-Day and the liberation of France.





Het Croix de Lorraine monument (resistance monument) is opgericht op het plein bij de kerk van Sainte-Mère-Église als eerbetoon aan de Franse verzetsstrijders die tussen 1940 en 1944 tegen de nazi-bezetting hebben gevochten.

The Croix de Lorraine monument (resistance monument) was erected on the square near the church of Sainte-Mère-Église as a tribute to the French resistance fighters who fought against the Nazi occupation between 1940 and 1944.






Op het plein tegenover de kerk Sainte-Mère-Église staat het standbeeld van Dwight D. Eisenhower en is een symbolish eerbetoon aan de geallieerde bevrijders en het strategisch leiderschap dat cruciaal was voor de overwinning in Normandië.

In the square opposite the Sainte-Mère-Église church stands the statue of Dwight D. Eisenhower, a symbolic tribute to the Allied liberators and the strategic leadership that was crucial to the victory in Normandy.






Het Airborne Museum
ligt direct bij het kerkplein en is gewijd aan de Amerikaanse parachutisten van de 82e en 1o1e Airborne Divisies die een cruciale rol speelden tijdens D-Day.

Voor het
Airborne Museum staat een M4 Sherman tank en was een van de belangrijkste tanks die de geallieerden gebruikten tijdens de invasie van Normandië.

Rond het plein vind je gezellige
restaurants, het plein is een mix van historisch belang, toerisme en dagelijks dorpsleven, waar geschiedenis en moderne gezelligheid samenkomen.
