Bezienswaardigheden / tips American Cemetery and Memorial 2026: 

1)
Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial: Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is één van de meest indrukwekkende Amerikaanse oorlogsmonumenten in Europa en ligt bij Omaha Beach. Het is officieel ingewijd op 18 juli 1956 en wordt beheerd door de American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). De locatie is boven de kliffen van Omaha Beach, waar duizenden Amerikaanse soldaten op D-Day (6 juni 1944) aan land kwamen. De oppervlakte is ongeveer 70 hectare en wordt zeer goed onderhouden. Er liggen hier 9.388 Amerikaanse soldaten begraven. De meesten sneuvelden tijdens de invasie van Normandië en de daaropvolgende militaire operaties in West-Europa. Elk grafsteen is een wit marmeren kruis of een Davidster, afhankelijk van de religie. De begraafplaats is dagelijks geopend van 09:00 tot 17:00, behalve tijdens Kerstmis en Nieuwjaarsdag. Respectvolle kleding en gedrag wordt verwacht, het is een gedenkplaats. De toegang is gratis.  

2) Visitor Center: Het bezoekerscentrum is modern en educatief en is ontworpen om bezoekers inzicht te geven in de menselijke kant van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Je vindt hier foto's, video's en audiofragmenten over de geallieerde landing in Normandië. Ook kun je profielen van individuele soldaten bekijken van soldaten die hier begraven liggen. Bijvoorbeeld de gebroeders Niland (waar het verhaal van Saving Private Ryan op gebaseerd is).  Kaarten met tijdslijnen en een indrukwekkende herinneringsmuur met namen en gezichten van gesneuvelde militairen. Ook hier is de toegang gratis.

Cemetery Chapel: De Cemetery Chapel is centraal gelegen op de begraafplaats. De kapel vertegenwoordigt de geestelijke en morele steun voor de soldaten en hun families. De kapel, omringd door duizenden witmarmeren grafstenen en uitzicht op zee, benadrukt de opoffering en de vrede waarvoor deze soldaten streden. De interieur van de kapel is eenvoudig, maar bijzonder symbolish en indrukwekkend. Een kleurrijk mozaïek op het koepelvormige plafond stelt de ziel van een gevallen soldaat voor die opstijgt naar de hemel, begeleid door een engel. Rondom het mozaïek staan Engelstalige inscripties met teksten over opoffering, vrijheid en vrede. 


4) The Garden of the Missing: De tuin van de vermisten is een herdenkingsgedeelte dat gewijd is aan de 1.557 Amerikaansen militairen die tijdens de gevechten in Normandië en de rest van Noord-Frankrijk zijn gesneuveld, maar nooit zijn teruggevonden of geïdentificeerd. Als de stoffelijke resten van een vermiste soldaat later zijn geïdentificeerd en begraven, wordt er een bronzen ster naast zijn naam geplaatst. De tuin benadrukt de tragiek van oorlog, dat velen nooit zijn teruggevonden. Tegelijk is het een plek van hoop en herinnering, deze mensen zijn niet vergeten.

5) Parkeren: Er is een grote, parkeerplaats direct bij de ingang van de begraafplaats. De parkeerplaats is geschikt voor personenauto's, touringcar bussen en campers. Het parkeren is ook gratis.

Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial: Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is one of the most impressive American war memorials in Europe and is located near Omaha Beach. It was officially dedicated on July 18, 1956, and is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). The site is situated above the cliffs of Omaha Beach, where thousands of American soldiers landed on D-Day (June 6, 1944). The area is approximately 70 hectares and is very well maintained. 9,388 American soldiers are buried here. Most died during the Normandy invasion and subsequent military operations in Western Europe. Each headstone is topped with a white marble cross or a Star of David, depending on the religion. The cemetery is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except on Christmas and New Year's Day. Respectful dress and behavior are expected; it is a memorial site. Admission is free.

Visitor Center: The visitor center is modern and educational, designed to give visitors insight into the human side of World War II. You'll find photos, videos, and audio clips about the Allied landings in Normandy. You can also view profiles of individual soldiers buried here, such as the Niland brothers (on whom the story of Saving Private Ryan is based). There are timeline maps and an impressive wall of remembrance featuring the names and faces of fallen soldiers. Admission is also free. 


3) Cemetery Chapel: The Cemetery Chapel is centrally located in the cemetery. It represents the spiritual and moral support for the soldiers and their families. The chapel, surrounded by thousands of white marble headstones and overlooking the sea, emphasizes the sacrifice and peace for which these soldiers fought. The chapel's interior is simple, yet deeply symbolic and impressive. A colorful mosaic on the domed ceiling depicts the soul of a fallen soldier ascending to heaven, accompanied by an angel. Surrounding the mosaic are English inscriptions with messages of sacrifice, freedom, and peace.

The Garden of the Missing: The Garden of the Missing is a memorial dedicated to the 1,557 American soldiers who died during the fighting in Normandy and the rest of Northern France but were never found or identified. When the remains of a missing soldier are later identified and buried, a bronze star is placed next to their name. The garden emphasizes the tragedy of war, that many are never found. At the same time, it is a place of hope and remembrance; these people are not forgotten.

5) Parking: There is a large parking lot directly at the cemetery entrance. The parking lot is suitable for passenger cars, coaches, and campers. Parking is also free.

Achter het herdenkingsmonument en de kapel op de begraafplaats leidt een pad naar een verhoogd punt. Hier heb je een panoramisch uitzicht over Obama Beach, dat zich onderaan de kliffen uitstrekt richting de zee.

Op de begraafplaats liggen 9.388 Amerikaanse militairen begraven. De militairen zijn bijna allemaal omgekomen tijdens de Slag om Normandië van juni tot augustus 1944.

Op de begraafplaats liggen niet alleen de soldaten die omkwamen op Omaha Beach maar ook op andere stranden zoals Utah Beach (zie film).

De Statue du Mémorial is een bronzen beeld van 7 meter hoog. De symbolische betekenis: het beeld vertegenwoordigt de jonge Amerikaanse soldaten die hun leven gaven tijdens de landing in Normandië en de bredere strijd in Europa tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Oprijzend uit de zee: Verwijst naar de geallieerde landingen op de stranden van Normandië (zoals Omaha beach), waar veel soldaten het leven lieten tijdens de invasie op D-Day, 6 juni 1944.

Its symbolic meaning is the statue represents the young American soldiers who gave their lives during the Normandy landings and the wider struggle in Europe during World War II. Rising from the sea: Refers to the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy (such as Omaha Beach), where many soldiers lost their lives during the invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1944.  






Bij the garden of the missing vindt je in de hal van het herdenkingsmonument twee grote kaarten in reliëf. Het toont de Landingsstranden in Normandië en de Militaire Operaties in West Europa.

At the Garden of the Missing, you'll find two large relief maps in the hall of the memorial. It shows the Landing Beaches in Normandy and the Military Operations in Western Europe.
