RONDA

                                                                       BEZIENSWAARDIGHEDEN / HIGHLIGHTS

Bezienswaardigheden / tips Ronda 2026:

1)

Highlights / tips Ronda 2026:

1)
Ronda: Ronda, built on a heavy limestone rock above a very deep gorge, is one of the most spectaculary situated cities in Spain. Due to its impregnable location, this city was one of the last Moorish bastions, finally falling into the hands of the Christians in 1485. This beautiful mountain town with its traditional bullring attracts many day trippers from the Costa del Sol, just 50 km (31 miles) away. It is not until late in the afternoon that the crowd leaves and the calm returns. The city has a long history, as can be seen from the prehistoric finds, the Roman excavations and the Arab baths. Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles lived in Ronda for years and described the beauty of the area.

2) Plaza de Toros: Today, bullfights in Ronda only take place in September, during the Feria de Pedro Romero. In honor of this famous torero, the 'game with death' is staged in period costumes, for which the public has to pay a big amount of money to secure a place in the arena with only 5,000 seats. Not far from the bullfight museum, in the old town hall, a very classy parador has been set up. The opening times vary per season and a ticket costs only 9.00 Euro including audio.

3)
Puente Nuevo: The Puente Nuevo (new bridge) leads over the El Tajo gorge to the old town. There is a footpath downwards where you can view the bridge from below. Here, you can also visit a small waterfall.

4) Santa Maria Mayor: On the plaza de la Duquesa de Parcent lies Ronda's main church, the Santa Maria Mayor, which was built on the foundations of the former mosque after the Christian conquest in 1485. A bell tower was places on the former minaret. In the front hall of the church, the mihrab arch testifies to the splendor of the former mosque. The church itself has two style periods. The western part is Gothic, while the eastern part was rebuilt in the Renaissance style after an earthquake. The most beautiful image of the church, a dolorosa, was created by the sculptor Luisa Roldán.

5) Palacio de Mondragón: Near the church lies the Palacio de Mondragón, where the taifa kings of Ronda used to live. Here you will see enchanting patios, Renaissance frescoes and Arabic tiles.

6)
Palacio del Marqués de Salvatierra: In the center lies a steep alley, before the Puente Nuevo, turn to the right and you will see the Palacio del Marqués de Salvatierra from the 18th century. The impressive entrance decorated with statues leads to the grandiose palace, which is furnished with precious furniture. From the garden you have a special view of the Serranía de las Neves. Slightly lower flows the Gualevín, which is spanned by the Puente Arabe (Arabian bridge).

7) Baños Arabes: In the valley lies also the Baños Arabes (Arabic baths), a highly developed bathing culture of the Moors. Via a road on the right bank of the river you will also find beautiful gardens.

Ronda lies untouchable on a high mountain ridge. Between the old town and the newer part lies the 160 m (524 feet) deep gorge of the Río Guadalevin, El Tajo, over which an impressive
bridge was built in the 18th century. (here on the photo).

The origin of the city of Ronda is Celtic, although older prehistoric remains have been found in the area.

After the Celts, the Phoenicians and Greeks populated the area around Ronda. Later the Romans called the place Arunda, because the town overlooked the area and thus had a strategic view all around.

At that time, trade in
Ronda also started to flourish. During the Mooorish rule, Ronda was declared as the capital of the province of Andalusia.

Ronda bouwde (zie film).

Most of the important historical building date from this time. It later came into the hands of the Moroccan Almohad dynasty, who built the Arab baths of
Ronda (zie film).

The plaza de Toros is the oldest bullfighting arena in Spain, dating back to 1785. The bullfighting tradition is inextricably linked with the Romero's torero dynasty.

Around 1720, Francisco Romero was the first to flight face to face with a bull. His grandson Pedro Romero set the rules of the modern bullfight. The small Museo Taurino displays the robes of famous toreros, bull's heads, old posters and photographs.
