Bezienswaardigheden / tips Giant's Causeway 2025:

1) Giant's Causeway: De Giant's Causeway (of de Reuzenweg) is een van de meest indrukwekkende natuurlijke bezienswaardigheden van Noord-Ierland, en staat op de UNESCO-werelderfgoedlijst. De Giant's Causeway is een kustgebied bestaande uit zo'n 40.000 basaltzuilen die perfect zeshoekige lijken te zijn. Ze zijn ontstaan door een vulkanische uitbarsting zo'n 50 tot 60 miljoen jaar geleden, tijdens het Paleogeen. Toen lava snel afkoelde, barstte het in deze bijzondere, regelmatige vormen, een soort natuurlijke "stoepstenen". De meeste zuilen zijn zeshoekig, maar er zijn ook vijf en zevenhoekige exemplaren. Sommige zijn wel 12 meter hoog. Hoewel de Giant's Causeway niet direct als locatie werd gebruikt in de serie, zijn veel scènes van Game of Thrones opgenomen in de omgeving. De basaltzuilen en het pad ernaartoe zijn gratis te bezoeken via een publiek wandelpad langs de kust. Als je gebruik wilt maken van de faciliteiten van het Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre ( beheerd door de National Trust, voor National Trust leden is het gratis) moet je £15,00 voor een ticket betalen. 

2) Parkeren: Parkeren is alleen inbegrepen als je een toegangs kaartje van £15,00 koopt voor het bezoekerscentrum. Parkeren zonder ticket is niet toegestaan op het terrein. Ze controleren je ticket bij het inrijden van het parkeerterrein.

3) Shuttle Service: Bij het Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre is er een shuttlebus die je van en naar de basaltzuilen brengt. Deze dienst wordt aangeboden door Translink en is vooral bedoeld voor bezoekers die moeite hebben met lopen. De prijs is £ 1,00 per enkele reis. National Trust leden mogen gratis gebruik maken van deze shuttlebus met een geldig lidmaatschap.

4) Blue Trail: De Blue Trail is een makkelijke wandeling en loopt via een verharde pad vanaf het bezoekerscentrum naar de Giant's Causeway. De trail is bedoeld voor alle leeftijden en geschikt voor mensen met een slechte conditie, kinderwagen of rolstoelen. De trail is 1 km lang.

5) Green Trail: De Green Trail biedt een wandeling langs de kliffen, vlak bij de beroemde basaltzuilen. Ideaal voor een ontspannen, en schilderachtiege wandeling met uitzicht over Schotland en het schiereiland Inishowen. De trail is makkelijk en het terrein is grotendeels toegankelijk voor kinderwagens en rolstoelen, hoewel er een paar steilere stukken zijn. De lengte van de trail is 3,2 km heen en terug. 

6) Red Trail: De Red Trail is een middelzware wandelroute die over de klifranden loopt met adembenemende uitzichten op de Atlantische Oceaan, de Giant's Causeway en de ruige kustlijn van Noord-Ierland. De startpunt is bovenaan de Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre. Vanaf hier volg je de rode markeringen langs het kliffpad richting Shepherd's Steps. Aan het einde van de Red Trail kun je via de Shepherd's Steps (ongeveer 160 treden) afdalen naar de Blue Trail of omkeren en via dezelfde route teruglopen. De trail is 3 km lang.

7) Yellow Trail (Runkerry Trail): De Yellow Trail oftewel de Runkerry Trail bij de Giant's Causeway is een van de verschillende gemarkeerde wandelroutes waarmee bezoekers de natuurlijke schoonheid en unieke geologie van het gebied kunnen verkennen. De trail begint vanaf de linkerkant bij de hoofdingang. Dan kom je bij een breed, vlak grindpad met een bord Yellow Trail (Runkerry Trail). Vanaf deze trail heb je uitzicht op Portballintrae, Runkerry Beach, Runkerry Huis (een 19e-eeuwse landhuis) en Giant's Causeway. Als je geluk hebt kun je hier ook dolfijnen spotten. De wandeling is makkelijk en geschikt voor de meeste bezoekers en gezinnen. De trail is in totaal 4 km lang heen en terug.

Bezienswaardigheden buiten Giant's Causeway 2025:

Hoewel er ontzettend veel te zien is aan deze prachtige kust benoem ik alleen de plekken die ik zelf heb gezien.

1) Dunluce Castle: Dunluce Castle is een middeleeuwse ruïne op een basaltrots tussen Portrush en Portballintrae en ligt 7 km ten zuiden van Giant's Causeway. Het is met het vasteland verbonden via een brug over steile kliffen. Het eerste kasteel werd waarschijnlijk in de 13e eeuw gebouwd. Tegen de 18e eeuw was het een romantische ruïne geworden. Dunluce Castle kan bezocht worden. Een ticket voor een volwassen kost £ 6,00. 

2) Portaneevy: Portaneevy is een officiële uitkijkpunt en parkeerplaats, gelegen op een locatie langs de Causeway Coast Way en de International Appalachian Trail. Het ligt op 15 km afstand ten oosten van Giant's Causeway. Vanaf hier heb je een prachtig, panoramisch uitzicht op Rathlin Island, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Sheep Island. Bij goed weer kun je ook Schotland zien. Deze plek is geliefd bij wandelaars, fotografen en natuurliefhebbers. Parkeren is gratis en het gehele jaar open.  

Highlights / tips Giant's Causeway 2025:

1) Giant's Causeway: The Giant's Causeway is one of Northern Ireland's most impressive natural attractions and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Giant's Causeway is a coastal area consisting of some 40,000 perfectly hexagonal basalt columns. They were formed by a volcanic eruption some 50 to 60 million years ago, during the Paleogene period. As lava cooled rapidly, it erupted into these unusual, regular shapes, a kind of natural "pavement". Most of the columns are hexagonal, but there are also five- and seven-sided ones. Some are as high as 12 metres (39 feet). Although the Giant's Causeway wasn't used directly as a location in the series, many Game of Thrones scenes were filmed in the area. The basalt columns and the path leading to them are free to visit via a public coastal walkway. If you wish to use the facilities at the Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre (managed by the National Trust and free for National Trust members), a ticket costs £15.00.

2) Parking: Parking is only included with a £15.00 visitor center ticket. Parking without a ticket is not permitted on-site. Your ticket will be checked upon entering the parking lot. 

3) Shuttle Service: At the Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre, there's a shuttle bus that takes you to and from the basalt columns. This service is offered by Translink and is primarily intended for visitors with walking difficulties. The price is £ 1.00 each way. National Trust members with a valid membership can use this shuttle bus free of charge. 

4) Blue Trail: The Blue Trail is an easy walk along a paved path from the visitor center to the Giant's Causeway. The trail is suitable for all ages and for people with poor condition, strollers, or wheelchairs. The trail is 1 km 0.6 miles (1 km) long. 

5) Green Trail: The Green Trail offers a walk along the cliffs, close to the famous basalt columns. Ideal for a relaxing and scenic walk with views over Scotland and the Inishowen Peninsula. The trail is easy and largely accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, although there are a few steeper sections. The trail is 2 miles (3.2 km) round trip. 

6) Red Trail: The Red Trail is a moderately difficult cliff-edge walk offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Giant's Causeway, and Northern Ireland's rugged coastline. The starting point is at the top of the Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre. From here, follow the red markers along the cliff path towards Shepherd's Steps. At the end of the Red Trail, you can descend the Shepherd's Steps (about 160 steps) to the Blue Trail, or turn around and return the same way. The trail is 1.8 miles (3 km) long. 

7) Yellow Trail (Runkerry Trail): The Yellow Trail, also known as the Runkerry Trail at Giant's Causeway, is one of several waymarked walking trails that allow visitors to explore the natural beauty and unique geology of the area. The trail starts from the left at the main entrance. It then joins a wide, flat gravel path with a signpost marked Yellow Trail (Runkerry Trail). From this trail, you have views of Portballintrae, Runkerry Beach, Runkerry House (a 19th-century country house), and the Giant's Causeway. If you're lucky, you might even spot dolphins here. The walk is easy and suitable for most visitors and families. The trail is a total of 2.5 miles (4 km) round trip. 

Highlights outside Giant's Causeway 2025: 

Although there is so much to see on this beautiful coast, I will only mention the places I have seen myself.

1) Dunluce Castle: Dunluce Castle is a medieval ruin on a basalt rock between Portrush and Portballintrae, 4,3 miles (7 km) south of Giant's Causeway. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge over steep cliffs. The first castle was probably built in the 13th century. By the 18th century, it had become a romantic ruin. Dunluce Castle is open to visitors. An adult ticket costs £ 6.00.

2) Portaneevy: Portaneevy is an official viewpoint and parking area, located along the Causeway Coast Way and the International Appalachian Trail. It's located 9.3 miles (15 km) east of Giant's Causeway. From here, you have stunning panoramic views of Rathlin Island, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, and Sheep Island. In good weather, you can even see Scotland. This spot is popular with hikers, photographers, and nature lovers. Parking is free and open year-round.





Sinds 1986 staat de Giant's Causeway op de lijst van UNESCO Werelderfgoed, vanwege zijn geologische en culturele waarde (zie film).

          Het Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre is de plek om je bezoek aan de reusachtige basaltzuilen te starten.

Je vertrekt bij het Visitor Centre en volgt een geasfalteerde weg naar beneden richting de kust via de Blue Trail.

You start from the Visitor Centre and follow a paved road down towards the coast via the Blue Trail.





De "Bay of the Cow" hier op de foto is een kleine rustige inham bij de Giant's Causeway. Deze inham kom je als eerste tegen op de Blue Trail.

               Vanaf de "Bay of the Cow" loop je door over een geasfalteerd pad richting de basaltzuilen (zie film).

Deze formatie bestaat uit ongeveer 40.000 zeshoekige basaltzuilen die zo'n 60 miljoen jaar geleden zijn ontstaan door de snelle afkoeling van vulkanische lava (zie film).

De bijna perfecte geometrische vormen van de zeshoekige zuilen zijn fascinerend en hebben talloze legendes geïnspireerd.

The almost perfect geometric shapes of the hexagonal columns are fascinating and have inspired countless legends.





Vanaf de basaltzuilen aan het water loopt er nog een pad omhoog en kun je de volgende basaltzuilen bekijken.

De Organ Pipes bij de Giant's Causeway zijn een van de meest opvallende en indrukwekkende rotsformaties in het gebied. Ze danken hun naam aan hun lange, rechte basaltzuilen die recht omhoog tegen een klifwand staat, net als de pijpen van een kerkorgel en zijn 12 meter hoog.

The Organ Pipes at Giant's Causeway are one of the most striking and impressive rock formations in the area. They get their name from their tall, straight basalt columns that rise straight up against the cliff face, resembling the pipes of a church organ, and are 12 meters (39 feet) tall.







Het gebied van de zuilen beslaat ongeveer 1,2 km langs de kust maar het totale UNESCO gebied (inclusief kliffen en trails) is vele honderden hectares groot.

The area of ​​the columns covers about 1.2 km (0,7 miles) along the coast, but the total UNESCO area (including cliffs and trails) is many hundreds of hectares.





Ongeveer 7 km ten zuiden van de Giant's Causeway ligt Dunluce Castle een middeleeuws kasteel en is aan weerszijden omgeven door extreem steile hellingen. 

About 7 km (4 miles) south of the Giant's Causeway, lies Dunluce Castle a medieval castle surrounded on either side by extremely steep slopes. 





Portaneevy is een plaatsje in County Antrim en ligt 15 km ten oosten van Giant's Causeway.  Er is een uitkijkplatform bij Portaneevy met een prachtig uitzicht op Carrick-a-Rede, Rathlin Island en zelfs Schotland op een heldere dag.

Portaneevy is a townland in County Antrim and is located 15 km (9 miles) east of Giant's Causeway. There’s a viewing platform at Portaneevy offering stunning views of Carrick-a-Rede, Rathlin Island, and even Scotland on a clear day.
