Bezienswaardigheden / tips Esch-sur-Sûre 2025:

1) Esch-sur-Sûre: Op 349 km (3,5 uur rijden) vanaf Amsterdam ligt het prachtige plaatsje Esch-sur-Sûre. Doordat het dorp in het natuurpark van de Boven-Sûre ligt zijn er wandelpaden te vinden van wel 90 kilometer lang. Ook vind je hier meer uitleg over de geschiedenis van het dorp met betrekking tot de lakennijverheid. Dit was namelijk de belangrijkste bron van inkomsten totdat het toerisme het overnam. Op een hoogte staat een kasteelruïne uit de 10e eeuw met een panoramisch uitzicht over Esch-sur-Sûre en de rivier. Een bezoek aan de Esch-sur-Sûre is absoluut de moeite waard.

2) Kasteel Esch-sur-Sûre: De meer dan duizend jaar oude kasteelruïne in Esch-sur-Sûre is de meest opvallende bezienswaardigheid van dit dorp. Deze ruïne staat bovenop een rots die uit het water oprijst, waardoor deze meteen de aandacht trekt. Hoewel de burcht vernietigd is in 1795 zijn de restanten nog goed te bezichtigen, waardoor een bezoek aan deze bezienswaardigheid zeker de moeite waard is. De staat verwierf in 2005 de ruïne en het volgende jaar werd begonnen met restauratiewerkzaamheden. De ruïne is vrij toegankelijk voor het publiek en wordt 's avonds verlicht. 

3) Laken Fabriek: In het natuurparkcentrum van Esch-sur-Sûre krijg je een fascinerend inzicht in het handwerk van lakenwevers. In de voormalige lakenfabriek is een tentoonstelling over de geschiedenis van de wolverwerking en de lakenproductie. Vandaag de dag komen de gerestaureerde machines, waarop exclusieve wollen stoffen worden gemaakt, in werking tijdens rondleidingen in het museum. Talrijke textielproducten en unieke souvenirs zijn te koop in de regionale winkel. 

4) Stuwdam: Op slechts 2 km afstand van Esch-sur-Sûre ligt de prachtige boog stuwdam. Deze indrukwekkende stuwdam werd gebouwd tussen 1955 en 1958. De stuwdam heeft een hoogte van 50 m (160 ft) en een lengte van 170 m (560 ft). Het doel van de dam en het reservoir is het leveren van gemeentelijke watervoorziening en de opwekking van waterkracht. De omgeving en het meer is erg populair als recreatieoord. Rond de stuwdam (5 km er vanaf) kun je hier diverse watersporten beoefenen zoals zwemmen, kanovaren, surfen en zeilen. Motorboten zijn verboden. 

5) Campings: Vlakbij het stadje liggen twee campings. Camping Im Aal Esch-sur-Sûre en camping Bistro Bissen. Camping Im Aal Esch-sur-Sûre ligt slechts 500 meter vanaf het centrum. Camping Bistro Bissen ligt op 2,7 km vanaf het centrum. Beide campings liggen direct aan de rivier de Sure/Sauer. De voorzieningen op camping Im Aal zijn sober terwijl de voorzieningen op camping Bistro Bissen uitgebreider zijn. 



Highlights / tips Esch-sur-Sûre 2025: 

1) Esch-sur-Sûre: The beautiful village of Esch-sur-Sûre is located 349 km (3.5 hours drive) from Amsterdam. As the village is located in the Upper-Sûre nature park, there are hiking trails of up to 90 kilometres long. You will also find more information about the history of the village in relation to the cloth industry. This was the main source of income until tourism took over. On a hilltop, a 10th century castle ruin offers panoramic views of Esch-sur-Sûre and the river. A visit to Esch-sur-Sûre is definitely worth it.

2) Castle of Esch-sur-Sûre: The more than a thousand-year-old castle ruin in Esch-sur-Sûre is the most striking attraction of this village. This ruin stands on top of a rock that rises from the water, which immediately attracts attention. Although the castle was destroyed in 1795, the remains are still clearly visible, making a visit to this attraction definitely worthwhile. The state acquired the ruins in 2005 and restoration work started the following year. The ruin is open to the public and is illuminated at night.

3) Cloth Factory: In the nature park centre of Esch-sur-Sûre you will get a fascinating insight into the craft of cloth weavers. In the former cloth factory there is an exhibition about the history of wool processing and sheet production. Today, the restored machines, which produce exclusive woollen fabrics, are put into operation during guided tours of the museum. Numerous textile products and unique souvenirs can be purchased in the regional shop. 

4) Dam: Just 1.2 miles (2 km) from Esch-sur-Sûre lies the magnificent arch dam. This impressive dam was built between 1955 and 1958. The dam is 50 m (160 ft) high and 170 m (560 ft) long. The purpose of the dam and reservoir is to provide municipal water supply and generate hydroelectric power. The area and the lake are very popular as a recreational area. Around the dam (5 km, 3 miles away) you can practice various water sports such as swimming, canoeing, surfing and sailing. Motorboats are prohibited.

5) Campsites: There are two campsites near the town. Camping Im Aal Esch-sur-Sûre and camping Bistro Bissen. Camping Im Aal Esch-sur-Sûre is only 500 metres (1.640 ft) from the centre. Camping Bistro Bissen is 2.7 km (1.6 miles) from the centre. Both campsites are located directly on the river Sure/Sauer. The facilities at camping Im Aal are modest, while the facilities at camping Bistro Bissen are more extensive.





Het prachtige historische dorpje Esch-sur-Sûre is gelegen aan de Sûre. Het dorpje heeft een rijke geschiedenis, in 1820 moest er een tunnel gegraven worden om het dorpje te bereiken. Vandaag de dag rij je door dezelfde tunnel om hier te komen.

The beautiful historic village of Esch-sur-Sûre is located on the Sûre. The village has a rich history, in 1820 a tunnel had to be dug to reach the village. Today you drive through the same tunnel to get here.





Het dorpje ligt op bijna driehonderd meter hoogte tussen de bergen en trekt al van verre de aandacht. De burcht ruines en de hoge rotsen trekken direct de aandacht. 

The village is located at an altitude of almost three hundred meters between the mountains and attracts attention from afar. The castle ruins and the high rocks immediately draw your attention.





                Esch-sur-Sûre wordt omringd door de rivier en de mooie oude huisjes zijn het bekijken waard.

Het kasteel van Esch-sur-Sûre is heden ten dag een ruïne. In 927 verwierven Meginaud en zijn vrouw de rots van Esch-sur-Sûre, waar zij een romaanse toren van acht bij acht meter en enkele boerderijen lieten bouwen. Het kasteel werd vergroot in de Gotische stijl door de twee laatste graven van Esch in de 13e eeuw.

The castle of Esch-sur-Sûre is now a ruin. In 927, Meginaud and his wife acquired the rock of Esch-sur-Sûre, where they had a Romanesque tower of eight by eight metres and several farms built. The castle was enlarged in the Gothic style by the last two counts of Esch in the 13th century. 





Door de introductie van buskruit in de 15e eeuw was extra verdediging nodig. Het hele dorp werd versterkt met een stevige muur die zich 450 meter rond het dorp uitstrekte, compleet met twee verdedigingstorens.

The introduction of gunpowder in the 15th century required additional defences. The entire village was fortified with a solid wall that stretched 450 meters around the village, complete with two defensive towers.





De ronde uitkijktoren werd ook gebouwd in de 15e eeuw, net als de toegangspoort en de kasteelstallen. De staat van het kasteel begon te verslechteren in het midden van de 16e eeuw en in 1685 werd het kasteel door de troepen van Lodewijk XIV ontmanteld.

The round watchtower was also built in the 15th century, as were the entrance gate and the castle stables. The castle's condition began to deteriorate in the mid-16th century and in 1685 the castle was dismantled by Louis XIV's troops. 





Het kasteel viel in handen van gewone mensen. In 1902 kocht een Egyptenaar de ruïnes van de staat voor 1000 francs (zie film).

Hij huurde een architect voor restauratiewerkzaamheden en de kapel werd in 1906 gerestaureerd, maar het geld raakte op men stopte met de restauratie (hier op de foto). Vandaag de dag kun je de ruïne gratis bezoeken.
