Algemene informatie: Catalonië had vroeger een eigen bestuur en wetten (Graafschappen, Kroon van Aragón). In 1714, na de Spaanse Successieroorlog, werden Catalaanse instellingen afgeschaft. Tijdens de Franco-dictatuur (1939-1975) werd de Catalaanse taal en cultuur onderdrukt. Veel Catalanen voelen dat hun autonomie en identiteit vaak beperkt zijn geweest. Ondanks Catalonië nog steeds een autonome regio is binnen Spanje is de samenleving verdeeld in twee kampen. Er zijn voorstanders van onafhankelijkheid en voorstanders van een eenheid met Spanje. De Catalaanse identiteit, taal en autonomie blijven centrale thema's. Over het toerisme in Catalonië zijn de meningen verdeeld. Het hangt sterk af van waar je woont en wat voor toerisme het is. Veel Catalanen waarderen de economische voordelen, vooral in toeristische steden en dorpen. Tegelijkertijd maken veel zich zorgen over drukte en veranderingen in hun leefomgeving.
