Bezienswaardigheden / tips Durbuy 2025:

1) Durbuy: Durbuy is een stad en gemeente in Wallonië in de Ardennen. Durbuy noemt zichzelf om commerciële redenen vaak de kleinste stad ter wereld, hoewel de officiële kleinste stad van België. Durbuy wordt voor het eerst genoemd in de 9e eeuw. Rond 889-900 werd er op de rots boven de Ourthe een versterkte burcht gebouwd om de omgeving te beschermen. In de 11e eeuw kreeg de nederzetting meer belang omdat ze op de grens lag van verschillenden machtsgebieden (Namen, Luxemburg, het Prinsbisdom Luik). In 1331 kreeg Durbuy stadsrechten. Er kwamen stadsmuren, een stadspoort en een marktplein. Durbuy trekt jaarlijks honderduizenden bezoekers vanwege diverse redenen. De middeleeuwse stadskern, bossen, rotsen en rivieren bieden veel outdoor activiteiten zoals kajakken, wandelen en mountainbiken. Durbuy staat ook bekend om zijn gezellige restaurants en goede keuken (Ardense keuken, bistronomie). Uiteraard is er ook een aanbod van leuke kleine winkeltjes. Durbuy is een geweldige mooie stad om te bezoeken en te verblijven.

2) Kasteel van Durbuy (Château d'Ursel): Er bestond al rond 899 een versterkt kasteel op deze plek. Het kasteel ligt aan de Ourthe, net voorbij de oude brug bij de ingang van Durbuy. Oorspronkelijk had het kasteel een militair doel, later evolueerde het naar een plezier residentie binnen de familie d'Ursel. De familie d'Ursel is een oude Belgische adellijke familie die al sinds de middeleeuwen een belangrijke rol speelde in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden (het huidige België). Het kasteel domineert het stadsbeeld. Het is in privé bezit, dus je kunt alleen de buitenkant bekijken maar het is zeer fotogeniek.

3) Rocher de la Falize (Homalius rots): De Rocher de la Falize is een indrukwekkende kalksteenrots die vlak naast het historische centrum van Durbuy ligt. De rots is vooral bekend om zijn boogvormige plooistructuur, een geologische fenomeen dat een "anticlinale" wordt genoemd.

4) Toeristisch treintje van Durbuy: De Durbuy toeristisch treinje neemt je mee langs de stadswallen, de oevers van de Ourthe en omhoog naar het uitkijkpunt Belvédère. Er is een gids aanwezig en verteld je over de omgeving in meerdere talen. De rit duurt 30 minuten en start bij Place aux Foires, vlakbij de kiosk in Durbuy. Er is geen vaste dienstregeling, het treintje vertrekt telkens wanneer er voldoende mensen zijn. Het treintje rijdt in het hoogseizoen dagelijks, in het voor en naseizoen alleen in de weekenden. De rit is niet gratis een ticket kost € 11,00 per volwassen. 

5) Belvédère uitkijkpunt (Du Belvedère des Crêtes): Het Belvédère uitkijkpunt is een platform hooggelegen op een rotswand vanwaar je een panoramisch uitzicht hebt over het historisch centrum van Durbuy, de Ourthe en de omliggende bossen en heuvels van de Ardennen. Je kunt er op twee manieren komen te voet of met het toeristentreintje (alleen in het seizoen of weekenden). Er lopen wandelpaden vanuit het centrum het bos is, het pad is steil maar goed te doen voor de meeste wandelaars. In de lente en zomer rijdt er een toerisgtisch treintje dat je naar het platform brengt. Dus ideaal voor mensen die niet goed ter been zijn is het treintje een alternatief.

6) Parc des Topiaires: De Parc des Topiaires ligt vlak bij het centrum van Durbuy en is een unieke buxustuin met meer dan 250 vormsnoeisculpturen. Je vindt hier dierenfiguren, menselijke figuren, abstracte vormen en er zijn hier diverse wandelpaden uitgezet waar je heerlijk kunt wandelen. Het park is niet gratis een ticket voor een volwassen kost € 5,00. Parkeren is ook niet gratis de kosten voor parkeren zijn €9,00. Het is verstandig om online te reserveren, zeker in het hoogseizoen als het behoorlijk druk kan zijn.

7) Église Saint-Nicolas: De kerk van Durbuy is mooi bewaard gebleven. De kerk is oorspronkelijk gebouwd in 1630 als kloosterkerk voor de Récollets. In 1643 werd de kerk ingewijd. In de loop van de 18e eeuw (1766/1774) werd de kerk aanzienlijk uitgebreid met een groter koor. In 2021 heeft de kerk een grote restauratie ondergaan, zowel aan de binnen en buitenkant. Sinds 1810 is het geen kloosterkerk meer, maar een parochiekerk en draagt nu de naam "Saint-Nicolas". De toegang tot de kerk is gratis.

8) Halle aux Blés: De Halle aux Blés (ook wel de graanhal genoemd) is een historisch gebouw in het centrum van Durbuy. Het huidige gebouw dateert ongeveer uit 1530-1540. De oorspronkelijke functie was veelzijdig, het gebouw diende als overdekte markt en als gerechtshof. Tegenwoordig huisvest de Halle aux Blés het Durbuy History & Art Museum (DHAM). Het museum combineert de geschiedenis van Durbuy en van het gebouw zelf met hedendaagse kunst. Een ticket voor een volwassen kost € 6,00. 

9) Adventure Valley Durbuy: Op ongeveer 2,3 km vanaf het historisch centrum van Durbuy ligt de Adventure Valley Durbuy. Het is een groot avonturenpark met zowel outdoor als indoor activiteiten zoals ziplines, tubing slide, klimbos, kajakken, laser games, bowling banen en nog vele nadere activiteiten. Het park combineert natuur (bossen, rotsen) met sportieve uitdagingen, perfect voor gezinnen, vrienden of teamuitjes. Hier parkeren is niet gratis en kost € 10,00 per dag. Ticket prijzen variëren. 

10) Labyrint van Barvaux: Aan de overkant van de Adventure Valley Durbuy ligt het Labyrint van Barvaux. Het is een groot maïsdoolhof van ongeveer 11 hectare groot. Er zijn zo'n 7 km aan paden om te ontdekken. Elk jaar is er een nieuw thema in het labyrint, met een bijhorend verhaal en decor. Er zijn animaties, acteurs lopen rond in het labyrint en brengen het thema tot leven. Je kunt hier gratis parkeren.   

Highlights / tips Durbuy 2025:

1) Durbuy: Durbuy is a city and municipality in Wallonia in the Ardennes. For commercial reasons, Durbuy often calls itself the smallest city in the world, although it is officially the smallest city in Belgium. Durbuy was first mentioned in the 9th century. Around 889-900, a fortified castle was built on the rock above the Ourthe River to protect the surrounding area. In the 11th century, the settlement gained importance because it was located on the border of several areas of power (Namur, Luxembourg, the Prince-Bishopric of Liège). In 1331 Durbuy received city rights. City walls, a city gate, and a market square were built. Durbuy attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year for various reasons. The medieval town center, forests, cliffs, and rivers offer a wealth of outdoor activities, including kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking. Durbuy is also known for its charming restaurants and excellent cuisine (Ardennes cuisine, bistros). Naturally, there's also a selection of charming little shops. Durbuy is a wonderfully beautiful town to visit and to stay.

2) Durbuy Castle (Château d'Ursel): A fortified castle already existed on this site around 899. The castle is located on the Ourthe River, just past the old bridge at the entrance to Durbuy. Originally, the castle served a military purpose, but later evolved into a pleasure residence for the d'Ursel family. The d'Ursel family is an old Belgian noble family that has played an important role in the Southern Netherlands (present-day Belgium) since the Middle Ages. The castle dominates the cityscape. It's privately owned so you can only see the outside but it's very photogenic.

3) Rocher de la Falize (Homalius rock): The Rocher de la Falize is an impressive limestone outcrop located right next to the historic center of Durbuy. The rock is best known for its arc-shaped fold structure, a geological phenomenon called an "anticline.

4) Durbuy Tourist Train: The Durbuy tourist train takes you along the city walls, along the banks of the Ourthe, and up to the Belvédère viewpoint. A guide is present and tells you about the area in several languages. The ride takes 30 minutes and departs from Place aux Foires, near the kiosk in Durbuy. There is no fixed schedule; the train departs whenever there are enough people. The train runs daily during high season, and only on weekends during the early and late season. The ride is not free; a ticket costs € 11.00 per adult.

5) Belvedere Viewpoint (Du Belvedère des Crêtes): The Belvédère viewpoint is a platform high up on a rock face offering panoramic views of the historic centre of Durbuy, the Ourthe river and the surrounding forests and hills of the Ardennes. You can get there in two ways: on foot or by tourist train (only in season or weekends). There are hiking trails from the center of the forest; the path is steep but manageable for most hikers. In spring and summer, a tourist train runs that takes you to the platform. The train is therefore an ideal alternative for people who are less mobile.

6) Parc des Topiaires: Located near the center of Durbuy, Parc des Topiaires is a unique boxwood garden with over 250 topiary sculptures. Here you will find animal figures, human figures, abstract shapes and there are several walking paths where you can enjoy a lovely walk. The park is not free; an adult ticket costs € 5.00. Parking is also not free; it costs € 9.00. It's wise to book online, especially during peak season when it can get quite busy.

7) Église Saint-Nicolas: The church of Durbuy is beautifully preserved. It was originally built in 1630 as a monastery church for the Récollets. The church was consecrated in 1643. During the 18th century (1766/1774), the church was significantly expanded with a larger choir. In 2021, the church underwent a major restoration, both inside and outside. Since 1810, it has no longer been a monastery church but a parish church and now has the name "Saint-Nicolas." Admission to the church is free.

8) Halle aux Blés: The Halle aux Blés (also known as the Grain Hall) is a historic building in the center of Durbuy. The current building dates from approximately 1530-1540. Its original function was multifaceted, serving as a covered market and a courthouse. Today, the Halle aux Blés houses the Durbuy History & Art Museum (DHAM). The museum combines the history of Durbuy and the building itself with contemporary art. An adult ticket costs € 6.00. 

9) Adventure Valley Durbuy: About 2.3 km (2 miles) from the historic center of Durbuy lies Adventure Valley Durbuy. It is a large adventure park with both outdoor and indoor activities such as ziplines, tubing slide, climbing forest, kayaking, laser games, bowling and many other activities. The park combines nature (forests and rocks) with sporting challenges, perfect for families, friends, or team outings. Parking here is not free and costs € 10.00 per day. Ticket prices vary.   

10) Labyrint van Barvaux: Across from Adventure Valley Durbuy lies the Barvaux Labyrinth. It's a large corn maze covering approximately 11 hectares. There are about 7 km (4.3 miles) of trails to explore. Each year, the labyrinth features a new theme, with a corresponding story and decor. There are animations; actors walk around the labyrinth, bringing the theme to life. Parking is free.

In de middeleeuwen was Durbuy een belangrijk centrum van handel, industrie en landbouw. De stad bleef klein maar bleef belangrijk voor handel en landbouw.

In the Middle Ages, Durbuy was an important centre of trade, industry and agriculture. The town remained small but remained important for trade and agriculture.



In deze periode werden veel van de karakteristieke stenen huizen en smalle straatjes gebouwd, die nu het historische stadscentrum vormen. Vandaag de dag is Durbuy een mooie en gezellig stadje met veel geschiedenis.

De Place aux Foires (hier op de foto) is het marktplein van Durbuy, gelegen in het historische hart van de stad. Het plein was historisch gezien een belangrijke plaats voor handelaren en markten.

Het gebouw waar restaurant La Vieille Demeure (hier op de film) in zit is gehuisvest in een gebouw uit de 17e eeuw. De straat maakt deel uit van het middeleeuwse centrum van Durbuy, waar veel gebouwen uit de 17de en 18de eeuw bewaard zijn gebleven.                                         

The building that houses restaurant La Vieille Demeure ( filmed here) is housed in a 17th-century building. The street is part of Durbuy's medieval center, where many buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved. 

De slagerij van Serge Bodson is vooral bekend om zijn ambachtelijke vleeswaren volgens de traditionele Ardenner manier. In het raam van de slagerij staat een beeld van een varken dat naar de vleeswaren gluurt.

Serge Bodson's butcher shop is best known for its artisanal meats prepared in the traditional Ardennes way. In the window of the butcher shop there is a statue of a pig peeking at the meat products. 







In Rue Alphonse Eloy één van de leukste straatjes van Durbuy staan oude huizen waarbij de gevels zijn bedekt met Virginia creeper (een soort klimop) wat zorgt voor een sprookjesachtige uitstraling.

In Rue Alphonse Eloy, one of the nicest streets in Durbuy, you'll find old houses with facades covered with Virginia creeper (a type of ivy), which gives it a fairytale-like appearance.





                              Ondanks Durbuy vrij klein is vindt je hier vele sfeervolle middeleeuwse straatjes.

                         Although Durbuy is quite small, you will find many atmospheric medieval streets here.

Durbuy heeft vele kronkelige smalle voetgangers straatjes en vele straten zijn autoluw in het oude stadscentrum.

Durbuy has many winding narrow pedestrian streets and many streets are car-free in the old city center.





Midden in het centrum ligt de anticlinaal van Durbuy, dit is geen gewone rotswand. Het is een geologisch verschijnsel een anticlinaal, wat betekent dat de gesteentelagen zijn geplooid in een omgekeerde U-vorm. De kalksteenlagen zijn door geologische processen omhooggeduwd. De rots is ongeveer 300 miljoen jaar oud.

Right in the center lies the Durbuy anticline, which is no ordinary rock face. It's a geological phenomenon called an anticline, meaning the rock layers are folded into an inverted U-shape. The limestone layers have been pushed up by geological processes. The rock is approximately 300 million years old.





De straat Derrière Clairval ligt direct langs de rivier de Ourthe, vanaf hier heb je een mooi uitzicht over het kasteel en de vallei van de Ourthe. 

The Derrière Clairval street is located directly along the Ourthe River, from here you have a beautiful view of the castle and the Ourthe valley.

Het kasteel staat op een hoogte aan de rand van het oude stadje Durbuy, boven een bocht van de rivier de Ourthe. Het kijkt uit over het centrum, de anticlinale rotswand en de vallei.

The castle stands on a hill at the edge of the old town of Durbuy, above a bend in the Ourthe River. It overlooks the town center, the anticlinal cliff face, and the valley.



Het kasteel heeft door de eeuwen heen zijn karakter veranderd, van militaire burcht naar een elegant landhuis (privé bezit).

Over the centuries, the castle has changed its character, from a military fortress to an elegant country house (private property).





Durbuy is een ideale uitvalsbasis om te kajakken op de Ourthe. De stromingen op de Ourthe zijn meestal gematigd en ideaal voor beginners en gezinnen.

Durbuy is an ideal base for kayaking on the Ourthe. The currents on the Ourthe are generally moderate and ideal for beginners and families.
