Bezienswaardigheden / tips Bristol 2025:

1) Bristol: Bristol is de grootste stad in South West England en behoort tot de belangrijkste steden van het land. De naam "Bristol" stamt af van het Oud Engelse "Brycgstow" wat plaats bij de brug betekent. Bristol staat bekend om een levendige cultuur, muziek, kunst, street art en de stad heeft een sterke creatieve scene. Straatkunst is belangrijk, de stad wordt geassocieerd met beroemde artiesten en je vindt veel murals en graffiti. Er is veel oude geschiedenis (oude gebouwen, haven, historische wijken) en moderne gebouwen. De stad heeft veel te bieden, je vindt hier een mix van het stadsleven, geschiedenis maar er is ook veel natuur. Bristol is zeker een bezoek waard.

2) Clifton Suspension Bridge: Deze iconische hangbrug over de kloof van de Avon Gorge is het symbool van Bristol. De brug is ontworpen door Isambard Kingdom Brunel, een van de beroemdste ingenieurs van de 19e eeuw. De brug werd voltooid in 1864 en de lengte is ongeveer 412 meter (1.351 feet) en de hoogte boven de rivier is 75 meter (246 feet). Vanaf de brug heb je een spectaculair uitzicht over de rivier, de kloof en de stad Bristol. Je kunt de brug te voet oversteken en genieten van de omgeving van Clifton Village en Clifton Down. Een absolute must in Bristol.

3) Clifton Village: Clifton Village ligt op korte loopafstand van de Clifton Suspension Bridge en Clifton Down. Het is één van de meest schilderachtige en welgestelde buurten van Bristol, met een mix van historische architectuur, boetieks, cafés en groene pleinen. Er zijn veel Georgische en Victoriaanse gebouwen met mooie gevels, smalle straatjes en karakteristieke huizen. De wijk heeft vele cafés en restaurants waar je bij mooi weer veel mensen buiten ziet zitten op diverse terrassen. De straatjes zoals Boyce's Avenue, Princess Victoria Street en The Mall vormen het hart van Clifton Village en staan bekend om hun mix van leuke boetiekjes en eet en drink gelegenheden.

4) Clifton Down: Clifton Down is een groot openbaar park ten noorden van Clifton Village. Clifton Down is populair om zijn mooie wandel en recreatiemogelijkheden. Je kunt hier wandelen, joggen, picknicken, fietsen of gewoon ontspannen. Ook heb je hier prachtige uitzichten vooral de kloof (Avon Gorge) en de omgeving staat hier bekend om. Op de heuvel staat Clifton Obervatory waar je kunt zitten en relaxen met één van de prachtigste uitzichten in het park. Clifton Down is onderdeel van een beschermde natuur en geologisch gebied. Het park is gratis en altijd open.  

5) Harbourside: Harbourside was vroeger een drukke dok en handelszone, schepen voerden af en aan. Tegenwoordig is het getransformeerd tot een levendig en cultureel hart aan het water. Het gebied loopt langs het water van de Floating Harbour, met wandelpaden langs de kade, bruggen en veel historische architectuur. De Cascade steps is ook een onderdeel van Harbourside. Verder vindt je hier vele restaurants, cafés, musea en allerlei attracties. 

6) Cabot Tower: De Cabot Tower staat op Brandon Hill, vlak bij het centrum van Bristol. De Cabot Tower is een vrijstaande toren die gebouwd is tussen 1896 en 1898, ontworpen door architect William Venn Gough. De toren is 32 meter (105 feet) hoog. De toren is opgericht ter herdenking van de 400-jarige verjaardag van de reis van John Cabot (en zijn schip de Matthew) uit Bristol naar Noord-Amerika in 1497. Rondom de toren ligt Brandon Hill, een van de oudere stadsparken van Bristol. Vanuit de Cabot Tower heb je een panoramish uitzicht over Bristol. De toren heeft twee uitkijkplatformen (via een wenteltrap naar boven), wat ideaal is voor foto's en overzicht van de stad. Toegang is gratis.

7) Bristol Cathedral: Bristol Cathedral werd oorspronkelijk gesticht rond 1140 als abdijkerk van een religieuze gemeenschap. Na de ontbinding van de kloosters in de 16e eeuw werd het gebouw in 1542 herbestemd als kathedraal voor het bisdom van Bristol. Door de eeuwen heen is de kathedraal flink verbouwd, de bouw en renovaties van verschillende delen duurden meerdere eeuwen. De kathedraal is nog steeds actief als kerk, er zijn dagelijkse gebeden, kerkdiensten en muziekevenementen. De kathedraal is open voor publiek en de toegang is gratis. Men vraagt wel om een vrijwillige donatie.

8) St Nicolas Market: St Nicholas Market is de oudste en bekendste marktplaats van Bristol. De handel begon al in 1743. De markt zit in en rond een historisch gebouw genaamd The Exchange op Corn Street in het centrum van de Old City. Vandaag de dag is het een levendig marktgebied met tientallen onafhankelijke winkels, kraampjes en eet en drinkgelegenheden. De toegang is gratis, je betaalt alleen voor goederen, eten en drinken, ideaal voor shoppers en toeristen die iets speciaals willen kopen of lekker willen eten. 

9) St Mary Redcliffe Church: St Mary Redcliffe is de Anglicaanse parochie-kerk van het stadsdeel Redcliffe in Bristol. St Mary Redcliffe is niet enkel een kerk, maar een monument met enorme historische, architectonische en culturele betekenis. Het gebouw getuigt van honderden jaren Engelse gotische bouwkunst, en herbergt verhalen van handel, zeevaart, rijke kooplieden en beroemde figuren. De kerk is open voor bezoekers en je kunt er vrij rondlopen en soms een rondleiding volgen. Op zondag kan de toegang beperkt zijn tijdens diensten. De toegang tot de kerk is gratis.

10) Brunel's SS Great Britain Museum: SS Great Britain is een historisch schip gebouwd in 1843 en was destijds een baanbrekende stoomboot. Het was het eerste grote passagiersschip met een stalen romp en schroefpropeller. Het schip maakte reizen over de oceaan en diende later ook als emigrantenschip, vracht en kolenschip. Uiteindelijk belandde het in de Falklands. In 1970 werd het teruggebracht naar Bristil en is sindsdien gerestaureerd. Een ticket voor een volwassen kost GBP 19,80.

2) Clifton Suspension Bridge: This iconic suspension bridge over the Avon Gorge is the symbol of Bristol. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of the most famous engineers of the 19th century. Completed in 1864, the bridge is approximately 412 meters long and 75 meters above the river. From the bridge, you have spectacular views of the river, the gorge, and the city of Bristol. You can cross the bridge on foot and enjoy the surroundings of Clifton Village and Clifton Down. An absolute must-see in Bristol.

3) Clifton Village: Clifton Village is a short walk from the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Clifton Down. It's one of Bristol's most picturesque and affluent neighborhoods, with a mix of historic architecture, boutiques, cafés, and leafy squares. There are many Georgian and Victorian buildings with beautiful facades, narrow streets, and characteristic houses. The area has many cafes and restaurants where, when the weather is nice, you will see many people sitting outside on various terraces. Streets like Boyce's Avenue, Princess Victoria Street and The Mall form the heart of Clifton Village and are known for their mix of charming boutiques and food and drink establishments. 

4) Clifton Down: Clifton Down is a large public park north of Clifton Village. It is popular for its beautiful walking and recreationel opportunities. You can walk, jog, picnic, cycle or simply relax here. You also have beautiful views here, especially the Avon Gorge, and the area is know for this. On the hill stands Clifton Observatory, where you can sit and relax with one of the most beautiful views in the park. Clifton Down is part of a protected nature and geological area. The park is free and always open.  

5) Harbourside: Harbourside used to be a busy dock and trading area, with ships coming and going. Today, it has been transformed into a vibrant and cultural waterfront hub. The area runs along the waterfront of the Floating Harbour, with waterfront walkways, bridges, and a wealth of historic architecture. The Cascade steps are also part of Harbourside. You'll also find numerous restaurants, cafes, museums, and a variety of attractions here.

6) Cabot Tower: The Cabot Tower is located on Brandon Hill, near Bristol city center. The Cabot Tower is a freestanding tower built between 1896 and 1898, designed by architect William Venn Gough. The tower is 32 meters (105 feet) tall. The tower was built to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's voyage (and his ship the Matthew) from Bristol to North America in 1497. Brandon Hill, one of Bristol's oldest city parks, surrounds the tower. From Cabot Tower, you have panoramic views of Bristol. The tower has two viewing platforms (accessible via a spiral staircase), which is ideal for photos and an overview of the city. Admission is free. 

7) Bristol Cathedral: Bristol Cathedral was originally founded around 1140 as the abbey church of a religious community. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the building was repurposed as the cathedral for the Diocese of Bristol in 1542. Over the centuries, the cathedral has been extensively rebuilt, with the construction and renovation of various parts taking several centuries. The cathedral remains a functioning church today, hosting daily prayers, church services, and musical events. The cathedral is open to the public, and admission is free. A voluntary donation is requested. 

8) St Nicolas Market: St Nicholas Market is Bristol's oldest and best-known market place, dating back to 1743. The market is located in and around a historic building called The Exchange on Corn Street in the heart of the Old City. Today it is a lively market area with dozens of independent shops, stalls and food and drink outlets. Admission is free; you only pay for goods, food, and drinks—ideal for shoppers and tourists looking to buy something special or enjoy a delicious meal.

9) St Mary Redcliffe Church: St Mary Redcliffe is the Anglican parish church of the Redcliffe district of Bristol. St Mary Redcliffe is not just a church, but a monument of enormous historical, architectural, and cultural significance. The building bears witness to hundreds of years of English Gothic architecture, and holds stories of trade, seafaring, wealthy merchants and famous figures. The church is open to visitors and you can walk around freely and sometimes take a guided tour. Access may be restricted on Sundays during services. Admission to the church is free. 

10) Brunel's SS Great Britain Museum: SS Great Britain is a historic ship built in 1843 and was a groundbreaking steamship at the time. She was the first large passenger ship to have a steel hull and screw propeller. The ship sailed across the ocean and later served as an emigrant ship, freight ship, and coal ship. It eventually ended up in the Falklands. In 1970, it was returned to Bristol and has since been restored. An adult ticket costs £19.80.

De Clifton Observatory (hier op de foto) is een historisch gebouw op de klifrand naast de Clifton Suspension Bridge, met prachtig uitzicht over de Avon Gorge en Bristol. Het is een van de mooiste uitkijkpunten van de stad.

De brug is een van de weinige hangbruggen in Europa die nog de orginele ijzeren kettingen heeft uit de 19e eeuw, dat maakt het niet alleen historisch, maar ook technisch waardevol (zie film).

Vanaf diverse punten heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de gorge met zijn rotswanden, kalksteenformaties, steile hellingen en veel natuur eromheen.

Op slechts enkele minuten loopafstad vanaf de Clifton Suspension Bridge ligt Clifton Village één van de leukste wijken van Bristol. De bekende straat de Mall is één van de hoofd straten in Clifton Village. Hier vind je een aanbod van boetieks, cafés, restaurants en pubs.

In Princess Victoria Street vind je vele terrassen. De straat is een paar jaar geleden deels een voetgangersgebied geworden wat het aangenaam maakt om buiten op een terras te zitten zonder autoverkeer.

Hannover Quay ligt aan het water van de voormalige dokken / haven. Je kunt langs de kade lopen, genieten van het uitzicht over de haven en de skyline van Bristol.

De Cascade Steps liggen in de Bristol Harbourside. Hier komen de locals en toeristen bij elkaar om aan het water te zitten, ontspannen en te genieten van het uitzicht over de haven en bootjes.

Queen Square is vandaag de dag een populaire plek om te ontspannen, rond te wandelen of even te ontsnappen aan de stadsdrukte. Het plein wordt omringd door mooi bewaard gebleven Georgische huizen.

Redcliffe Wharf is een van de laatste grote kavels aan de waterkant van de Floating Harbour. Zijn mooie gekleurde huizen geven levendigheid aan de kade. Ook zijn er grote nieuwe waterfront appartementen gebouwd.
